PRINCIPAL
Dear Families and Carers,
Spring has arrived! The weather man forecasts temperatures of 25 and 26 degrees on Monday and Tuesday next week, so we can look forward to the warmer weather. We still continue to have a lot of sickness throughout the school including Influenza A & B as well as RSV and pneumonia. Should your child be sick, please keep them at home to recover. Don’t forget to contact the school to advise.
School Parents & Citizens Association (P&C)
Kayla and Carrie, our P&C President and Secretary, continue to work consistently towards positive outcomes for our school. They recently opened new P&C bank accounts and look forward to more fundraising to help support our students.
Woodrising Early Learning Centre
Last Thursday we had our second of several planned visits from a group of 4-year-old children and their teachers from the Woodrising Early Learning Centre (WELC). Our students and the WELC children happily worked together and had the opportunity to learn more around social skills and opportunities available in the community. All children thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity and we look forward to their next visit. Thanks to our Kookaburra class teacher, Danielle for your awesome planning and organisation of these events. Many thanks to these wonderful young children (and their teachers) who are learning to give back to society, build authentic friendships, and participate in learning whilst supporting our students to learn, communicate and socialise. We look forward to their next visit.
After School Pick-ups
Over the last two weeks we have had further incidents concerning the collection of students after school. Could parents and carers please be mindful of the congestion of vehicles that can occur when everyone is trying to collect their child at the end of the day. The Assisted School Travel vehicles have been reminded of their designated collection and drop-off times and the need to remain within these timeframes to ensure student safety. The recent congestion on pick-up has caused student distress and in cases, self-harm. Please for the sake of our students, be considerate of other drivers and don't block our school driveway. There should be no vehicles waiting in between the entrance driveway gates. If the driveway is full, please drive by and return once the driveway is clear and safe to enter.
Attendance
Please remember to notify the Office staff should your child be absent from school – same day notification would be appreciated to save further follow-up. Following Department of Education guidelines, same day text messages will be sent to parents/carers should a student be absent from school. The school would like to support families in any attendance concerns or issues so please let us know if you need any support.
School Uniforms
Please remember to label all school clothing especially hoodies and jackets so items are returned to the correct owner.
Warmest Regards

From the Assistant Principals

We are excited to invite our families to our Book Week Assembly on Friday 12th September at 9:15am on the deck. Students are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite book characters – we can’t wait to see the creativity shine! Over the past weeks, students have been exploring Aboriginal Dreaming stories, and we are very proud to be presenting their learning and celebrations at this assembly.
Thank you to our dads, pops, and father figures who attended our Father’s Day Breakfast on Thursday 4th September. This is always a special occasion to come together as a school community and celebrate the important role of our fathers and carers.
This week we want to give a big shout-out to the amazing staff who keep Five Islands School running like a well-oiled machine (most of the time!). To our SLSOs – thank you for your care, patience and commitment to our students’ education. You make a huge difference every day, and it’s an absolute pleasure to work alongside you. To our fabulous office staff – thank you for keeping us organised (and sane!) and somehow making the impossible look easy. And to our GA – we appreciate the way you keep our grounds safe, our equipment working, and our gardens looking better than our own at home. We are so lucky to have such a hardworking, supportive (and entertaining) team around us.
Finally, we wish all our wonderful families a very Happy Father’s Day on Sunday – thank you for all that you do.
Warm regards, Ali, Meg & Emma
Lyrebird

Lyrebird Class actively participates in the Food Technology program each week, developing a wide range of practical and academic skills. Students prepare lunch order bags and deliver them to each class, giving them opportunities to practise literacy and communication skills. They then organise and cook the lunch items, applying numeracy through measuring and following recipes, while also learning the importance of safe food handling. Once the meals are ready, students deliver lunches to their peers, reinforcing responsibility, teamwork, and service. This program provides valuable hands-on experience, supporting independence and confidence in everyday life skills.

Woodrising Early Learning Centre Visit
Last week, Woodrising Early Learning Centre visited our school and spent some time with a group of our students. We had a great time singing songs, reading The Rainbow Fish book and helping each other to make paper plate fish.
We enjoyed their visit and look forward to seeing them again in week 10.

Out of the Shadows Walk

Andrew Cooper
I am walking 9km to ensure no one has to face their darkest moments alone.
Tragically, every year over 65,000 Australians attempt to take their own life and over 3,000 Australians die by suicide.
Lifeline receives over 1 million contacts from people in crisis each year.
Suicide has devastating impact on friends and loved ones.
For World Suicide Prevention Day (Sept 10), I will be taking part in Out of the Shadows and walking for the 9 people lost to suicide every day.
I'm walking to raise funds for Lifeline to provide suicide prevention services and support for Australians in need.
Please support my walk and sponsor me to help those in crisis. If you would like to donate to this worthy cause, please follow the link below.
Together, we can ensure that no one has to face their darkest moments alone.
